A rod bolt torque

Can't find my I&T book for the A. Wondered if
someone could give the torque value.

Could mechanics wire be used in place of the
cotter keys for locking the castelated rod
nuts? I suppose IH had their reasons for
using keys on the rods.

My "Genuine IH" manual says 40 foot pounds. Also says the numbered side of the rods and caps are to face toward the camshaft side of engine!

As for the cotter keys I would use them over the wire and get ones that fit the holes as snug as possible. I'd be concerned the wire might wiggle and break off too easy.

Both will work. I suppose the wire was originally in them. Wire would probably want to be threaded from one side to the other like most wire is used on those type of jobs. Cotter pins will work as well.

Torque both them in increments -- both sides of a rod to 30, then both sides to 35 and finally both sides to 40.
I use stainless steel cotter pins. Not much more in cost but more durability.
