A Starter Problem

Folks,

I'm having a starter problem on my 8N. At times when engaging the starter it won't engage and I'll hear it just spinning. Also, sometimes it will engage and start to crank the engine, then will drop out and just spin.

This is happening more and more often. Do I need to replace the whole starter or can it be rebuilt?

sounds to me like you need a new bendix on it.

It is the drive, and it can be replaced. When you remove the starter, make sure to put nuts on the mounting bolts, to keep the starter from
separating.

Remove the starter. ( see tip # 36)

Turn the ring gear w/ a long screwdriver and make sure you do not have worn teeth.

Assuming the ring gear is ok, replace the Bendix. ( see tip # 52)

One more thing...?..getting old & forgetful!

Check your battery voltage, cables & grounds.

Low voltage will spin the starter, but not fast enough to engage the Bendix.

On any tractor, a starter that just clicks and/or spins when the push button starter button is depressed is an indication you have a poor or bad battery. Get you VOM out
and set for DC VOLTS and test the battery voltage static. If it falls short, there's your problem. Test for specific gravity because if it won't sustain a full charge
under load, it needs replacing; a simple 'charging' won't suffice. Your starter/alternator shop guy and most auto parts franchises, and even if you still have a service
station with a full mechanic on duty, will test your battery. Then, once problem is solved, invest in a decent float charger, NOT a trickle charger. The DELTRAN BATTERY
TENDER JR. (6V) is very good. keep teh float charger on when tractor nit in use. A battery that measures 6.2 on a 6V or 12.4 on a 12V battery is only 25% charged! A 6V
should read 6.6-7.2 VDC fully charged and a 12V should be about 14 VDC. In a pinch, they sell cheap little hydrometers at auto parts store counters -they look like an eye
dropper with a half dozen colored balls in the glycerin. I prefer trusty test equipment myself. Also, a fully charged battery will not freeze.
