36'' pipe wrench.
I'm replacing rear axle seals and brakes on my Ford 3000.
Had to buy a 2 3/4'' socket to get the bearing retainer nut off.
I strapped the tire to another tractor so I can get some leverage.
It's crude and laborious but working. And I'm glad I had the old Ridgid I could drag out of the dark recesses of my garage.
Note the wrench handle is bent. Two men and a boy - long before me - did that.

I have a 36 inch that looks just like yours,and I was not around to see it bent either,but I bet the pipe was long!

My question in those situations: Did the nut come loose on the first turn, or did you have to keep resetting the socket and reefing on it?

Yep, my Trimo 36'' drop forged pipe wrench is one of my favorite tools. Here it is vs a 3'' nut at the top of a 20 ton bottle jack. As in milling workholding is half the battle. How much was your big socket? I looked into a 3 incher so I could use impact but the cost was more than buying a new jack.

Most generaly they were nylock nuts and some were red locktited too. The next fun is pushing axle out thru bearing.

Its my belief when properly torqued it stresses the treads in the nut. A new nut will thread right on a used nut comes off hard ALL THE WAY AND goes on hard all the way.

I said self on the next one I am buying new nuts and glad I did : ) The customer paid for them it sure made life much better for me. Dawg is a ingenious guy I made a plate to bolt the axles to my 1300 lb table when I went to torque the nut it may be the only time I have felt that table move.

I told dawg I torque that nut down mark it and move it another 1/4"... If you torque it as it should be its not going anywhere and my way it taint ether : 0

The threads on the nuts are an interference fit - not nyloc. They came off Hard all the way.
Had to keep adjusting the wrench. 1/3 turn at a time
I will locktite them back on.

Shaun, Getting the bearings out was easy.
I grabbed the axles by the backing plate and pounded the end of the axle on the concrete a few times. They popped right out. Will make a long pipe/driver to pound them back in.

The socket came from Napa. $32 1 day wait from warehouse. It is rather heavy for this style. 3/4'' ratchet hole. I had to remove that part to get it over the axle. It's not any worse for wear except for teeth marks from the pipe wrench.
Am having the brake shoes relined at a local shop. About the same price as new ones from YT.

I made a couple of seal drivers yesterday.
This job was all just for practice -
Am still aspiring to be a geezer who can fix stuff...

Everyone I have done didnt come apart that easy, had to use a puller,Nuday NCA-4235 to get axle out thru bearing.
