A trans update

I went back this morning to re-check the oil gear. If I seeing things right there isn't one? There were some metallic shavings but I think that may be from someone being hard on third and fourth gear from the looks of it. Doesn't look like much room behind first for a oil gear?
As I' was writing this I looked at the original manual I got with this tractor. I don't see the oil gear in the parts break out. I did clearly see it in the service manual-after market.

In this diagram #40 is a gear as opposed to
Jim's saying it is the aluminum slinger.
Wondering if there are differing diagrams.

If this link will post it shows a picture of one. It would mesh with a input shaft gear and spin around the other shaft in your picture to sling oil. Yours is apparently MIA. In other words it either went bad and someone broke it to pieces and pull them out or they assembled it with out it as many have done. As was said only needed if you are doing stationary PTO or belt pulley work. It is number 40 in your parts book.
Poke here

(quoted from post at 11:49:11 12/21/21) I should have added I believe this is a 1940 A from when I checked the ser number.
It would have probably saved a bunch of discussion if you had mentioned that earlier. The slinger was added at serial 39022, very end of 1940. All comment about the oil slinger are irrelevant to your problem.

If you replace top cover, you might be able to use a mechanics stethoscope to hear where the most noise is coming from. No need to bolt it down, but with it off, there may be some splash, and you don't want the gears to drift into grinding from no position control on neutral. Jim
