AC 5040 - Is it worth it?

Hey guys. My friend just acquired a 5040 from his neighbor. He got it FOR FREE! All he had to do was pull it out of the weeds. Apparently about 5 years ago it wasn"t running so he had a local guy come over and work on it (don"t know what the issue was). $600 later it ran, but for only about 6 hours. After that they gave up on it and parked it. Is this going to be an "awkward" one to work on or are there a number of these still out there. It"s just a bit out there for me because I"m only familiar with the "oldies." Any suggestions would be great.

they're a tough little 40hp tractor.
built heavy but fit & finish isn't all that great.

I've heard parts can be a problem, but I've not needed anything on the one I have since I got it 3 yrs ago. It only had 470hrs on it, but now it's got 480 and I see the hour part of the meter isnt working; but the RPM needle is (?)
Obviously I don't use it that much. But it sure does good with a mounted 6' rotary mower in 4th gear. This one has a 6-speed transmission.

6 hours is quite a bit of time for a diesel to run then quit.
Have you checked the fuel tank and fuel filter ?
Maybe a bunch of junk and it just plugged up ?

There's a procedure for bleeding the fuel system.
Think I might have a scanned page that I could send if it would help.

You've still got a decent tractor for only 600, and maybe after a coupla hundred more, or whatever it takes, I'm sure you'd like it.

I used one for a couple years 'till it burnt up in a barn fire, agree with Gatz, decent tractor, rough finish, controls seemed awkward to me, easy on fuel.

I was told they were built for Allis by Fiat, a neighbor had a Long tractor, can't remember what model, it was identical to the 5040 except for the paint. There was a Long dealer closer than the Allis dealer, I got a couple parts (front spindle and bearing)from him.

Made by a communist bloc country and since their fall parts have become nonexsistant so be prepared to make do it is however a match for the Long 460 if you can find one that has not been stripped or scrapped. Good Luck.

Basically agree with cadet. I believe it was Romania. It was a Fiat design. It's worth what he paid for it. If you can tinker it up for not much then good. The 5050, a little bigger, and made by Fiat, in Italy(if I remember correctly) was much nicer.

My 5040 is a great mower tractor!!
Parts haven't been to bad yet, including some on this sight.
I need a grill for mine, no luck so far.
Good Luck Dennis

The tractor is made by UTB in Romania. The company built tractors under license from Fiat but there is very little Fiat content in the tractor. 40 pto hp.
Most likely, you have fuel supply problem.

Im not sure if they are the same but Oliver/MM had some Fiat built tractors. There is a website for import parts but I cant remember it. Someone on the Oliver board might know.
