AC 5040 Safety Switch

I recently acquired a 5040 and found the safety switch inoperative. I have manuals and parts book, but I have found safety switches for a great many tractors. Not so for a 5040. Can anyone tell me if the switch is a problem with this model and where I might find one? I do lurk on the Ford, Farmall and Oliver board but this is my first Allis-Chalmers. Thank you for any help I get now and down the road

You don't say which safety switch you are looking for. Looking at the online parts book it appears there are two safety switches. Part number 70291924 "SWITCH ASY., safety start" has been replaced by part number 70291924V. The clutch safety plunger switch is part number 70248659. It looks like both are available through AGCO. There are several aftermarket hits on the Clutch safety switch. AGCO may be your only option on the other.

Thanks Jim, I have a parts book that shows a part number 2091942 as safety start switch with the boot included. I have surfed through the AGCO listings with both 2091942 and 70291924v and can't seem to connect. I also noticed that several 5040's I looked at had the safety switch disconnected so that why I asked if this was a part that failed more than usual and might be difficult to find. My part book is a reprint so it might also be outdated. Finding parts is always a fun sport.

Use the online parts book to see updated part numbers. The 291924 part number predates the changes where AC added a zero in front of that number, then a later change added the 7 in front.

Here is a link to the online 5040 parts book at AGCO parts.

You can select an ecommerce dealer there and see an idea of price and availability. You can set up an account with a dealer and purchase online if you want. I see a price of close to $110 for that switch, that might explain why many are bypassed.

Is that the one that screws down in the top of the transmission? I can't find it on Agcopartsbooks. If it is the one, have you unscrewed it from the cover and pushed the button by hand to check it?

If it's the same as my Oliver 1365, the part that pushes it in, pushes it such a short distance, I can see where it wouldn't take much for it to fail. I had that cover off mine just last week because the reverse latch pin broke. I moved the pin in that switch and saw just how little movement there is in them.

If it's the one for the transmission, it IS fixable, but requires some machining.
The Neutral Safety Switch is an assembly with a crimped base to phenolic(?) top. Item 16

It's very possible that the contacts within are corroded enough to not make a circuit; which is req'd to complete the start circuit.
Short of bypassing the NSS, one thing you could try is removing it and spray some electric contact spray into the stem/housing.
Work the stem or plunger in/out numerous times, drain, repeat etc to see it that helps.

If not, I can show you how I fixed mine, and it worked fine.

Thats great and yes, it is on top of transmission, and I found some great pictures of the part by you (gatz271) in a forum search published in 2019. I'll pull it out again and fool with it, but I'm sure it's beyond my pay grade to fix. I think my plan will be to go around it until I find me a new one. I'll keep you all posted, nice to find such great help, Thank you

sleepy1 your direct link to a Stiener part is getting you completely blocked out in Modern and the name in the link blocked in Classic, making it useless. The site filters don't like the competitors.

Those tractors apparently have two safety switches, the switch you posted about is the clutch pedal safety switch, available several places, however he needs the one in the transmission which is different.
