AC b - no oil pressure

I just bought an AC b , 1939? (vin B20634) The seller told me he lost oil pressure (according to the gauge) one day and shut her right down. The motor turns free and I believe no damage was done.
This has a Napa spin on oil filter and a Case oil pressure gauge that reads to 60 lbs.
I was hoping that someone might offer some suggestion as to where they would start in diagnosing the problem.
The seller also said that he removed the pan and the pickup was spotless.
The tractor is in great shape and I would love to put it to use. It has a great manure loader on it and is the perfect size for my use.
Please let me know what you all think.
Thanks

Make sure it is a rag type filter, buy a 20 pound gage, and prime the pump. To prime the pump, remove the oil line that feeds the filter and head and pump motor oil down the line with a squirt can. I like to use a gas line hose to get more oil into the pump. Take the plugs out and spin the engine over to get oil pressure before starting the engine. If you get 10 pounds of oil pressure you would have all you will get. That would be (NORMAL) on an Allis gage.
There is always a chance that the drive pin for the pump broke. Not many Allis B tractor drivers would notice when the oil pressure dropped. Not many watch the gage when working the tractor all the time. When I hear something like that I take it with a grain of salt. But if by chance he was watching it and it did drop all at once it very well could be the pump drive pin.

I think the filter is a spin on filter from Napa. Do you happen to know what filter to replace it with.
It sounds like he was driving the tractor and happened to glance at the gauge.
I will prime the pump and get a lower pressure gauge.
If you can help me out with the filter number that would be great.
Thank You

I think it would have to be old stock to get a bad filter now. You always want to look anyway. The problem was corrected by the filter manufactures as I understand. Just look at the filter before paying to make sure it is not pleated paper. The rag type with the wood stick in the center is what you are looking for. Make sure the metal tube is in the filter base then remove the stick and place the filter over the tube. If the metal tube is gone or worked up out of the base it will not build pressure on the gage. The pressure is made from the oil being forced from the top of the filter down to the base. It is called a bypass pressure system.

You should be using a FRAM C159 filter. The older NAPA and WIX were made wrong and caused low oil pressure. YOu can look at the inside and see if it is the stuffed cotton design, but i would just change it out to FRAM. while the filter is off, crank the motor a few times and see if oil squirts out of the 1/4 inch tube up the middle of the filter. THEn use a god 20 psi gauge as the guys said. You will only get 7-15 psi or pressure.

See <a href="http://www.worldpath.net/~thompson/acb/filter/oilfilter.htm">this</a> the correct filter info.

My cousin bought one that had the exact same thing happen to it. We tore the engine down because we were going to check it out but it was a broken spring in the oil pump if I remember right. Was a very easy cheap fix. I would take it off and check the oil pump. After you get it back together it probably wont want to prime even if you fill it with grease. I removed the oil line on the side of the engine and used a nice oil can to pump it full of oil until it primed the oil pump. After that it was always fine like it was supposed to be. Good luck.

Sounds like the 39B I bought last year. Low oil pressure. HA!!! Pin sheared in Cam shaft. Ruined bearings (mains and rods) had to have crankshaft ground. Am still in the restoration process.
Thanks, Tim

Probably a dumb question but when priming the pump , when do you know its primed? I squirted oil in the line but dont know when to stop.
