AC Capacitor Source

Hi, all. Sorry for another wildly OT post; I just can't help myself when it comes to tapping the wealth of knowledge here.

Anywho, I am struggling to find sources for a replacement for my AC capacitor in this picture

I think I need a run capacitor rated at 250V and 45 microfarads, but I am very much a novice in this realm.

Based on my assumptions above, I have Googled a little bit. And I only came up with one candidate - Ebay Capacitor. I'm not 100% certain this will be a suitable replacement. And it would be nice to have more than one option.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Neil

Your local A/C shop could supply you with one. AC generally means Alternating Current, whereas A/C generally means Air Conditioning.

Baring them, then Mouser Electronics or DigiKey would have what you need. zuhnc

Excellent! Thank you for the leads, along with the pointer on AC vs. A/C. I always learn a lot here.

If you have an electric repair type place in your area they are likely to have one. Where I live we have a place the repairs a lot of different electric type things from motors to dock lifts etc and they always have them on hand

GOOGLE "45 mfd motor run capacitor" and pick the best deal with the same or a higher voltage rating, with dimensions that will fit where it needs to go. DONE.

Thanks! Very helpful to know the voltage specification can be higher than the original. I thought maybe, but wasn't sure. And it seems like there are oodles of 45 mfd units, just not many with a 250V spec.

Be sure to look for a RUN cap vs. a START cap

AmRad should outlive you. Get one with a higher voltage rating for longevity. Google the phrase below. In the meantime, get whatever will be at your door tomorrow morning.

AmRad Round Run Capacitor 45 MFD 370/440 VAC USA2216

That sounds like a winner, as I don't want to have to replace this again:-)

Thanks!

I think I see four connectors on that one. It MAY be a dual unit, both start and run plates in one canister. Read the label completely, and make sure you are getting the right unit. I can't tell if it's a run or a dual start and run.

One capacitance value will be very low, like 5uFd, and the other I can see is 45uFd. Make sure you connect the wires back correctly or it will not last.

Finally, I strongly suggest you get a cap made in US. The Chinese caps will only last a few years. I've fought this battle many times with rentals.

''I strongly suggest you get a cap made in US."

Good luck with THAT!

Why do you have to bust my balls? Make me work overtime? Shouldn't you do your own research first?

If you don't like my suggestions, find out how to put me on ignore, or just STFU.

In our shop as well as personally as posted above I agree Graingers is a good source for both parts plus good advice . With an old unit in hand knowing the voltage and capacitance they can help.

Amazon is where I got mine for a spare to have on hand after the AC guy charged me $175 dollars to replace one.

Voltage is way too low . Caps are rated at peak voltages . 340V on 240V so even the classic 330V cap is barely enough .
The ufd rating can be increased to 50 or 60 , no problem .

The 250 spec just means it's the cheapest there is. Just go to ebay and get a round 45mf capacitor made by Mars or Supco. 370 or 440 will both be fine. These are made in Mexico which is as good as you can get now a day's.
