Adding Power steering on John Deere 60

Good day! I have a non running parts tractor with power steering. I want to take it off and add it to my non powered steering tractor as I have a loader.

I’m missing all the hoses And tubing.

What should I check before installing? Is there a way to check the pump for instance, before adding?

I’m sure I’m not the first to do this, so any pointers to a blog or forum would be a huge help.

Yes, I have a manual. I’m studying up on that now. However, I would like to learn from someone who has already done this....pictures are a huge help to folks like me! :)

Thank you!

A big concern to me would be if dirt and moisture has entered the system through the ports where the missing lines should be.

Wonder why they would all be gone?

The pressure hose from the pump has standard 1/2" pipe threads at each end, the other three lines are special/unique to this application. Do you have a source for those?

If I was going to do this, I would completely go through the pump and the pedestal and check for any damage/wear and reseal them. If everything is OK otherwise, the cost of the seals is minimal and will set you up with a unit that should work for many years.

It's a he77 of a lot more work to find it leaks or doesn't work right and have to tear the whole darned thing off to make repairs later.

A "tricky" wear point is the "cam and pin" at the end of the worn gear.

If there's wear or damage there the PS won't work properly, may steer hard in one or both directions, and be impossible yo center the valve (meaning it will always be trying to steer in one direction on it's own).

It helps to have worked on a few to help judge the condition of those parts.

At a certain serial number the top radiator tank part number also changed to allow room for the lines and hoses to clear. I'd also look into that.

Good day folks,

Would anyone have an actual picture of the hose and tubing runs? My manual has a diagram but it may be easier for me to understand with an actual picture :)

I plan to take the parts to a hydraulic hose shop to find the correct fittings.

If ok, I’ll post pictures of what I find as I disassemble the parts tractor and hopefully, get some feedback....I’m trying to discover if What I have will actually work....

Thank you!

Do you have THIS drawing?

I wish you luck at the hydraulic shop, but, as I stated before, the pressure line is a standard hydraulic hose with 1/2" NPT fittings, the 3 hard lines use fittings that use "packings", and (AFAIK) are unique and proprietary, you will have to find original NOS or good used lines to get those fittings.

As an example, the "suction tube" is Part #AR21028R, to see what it and the fittings at each end look like, have a look at ebay Auction #333628072163.

Left and right steering lines are AF2345R and AR2346R.

No! This much cleaner than my manual shows! Thank you. I see what you mean by the fittings.

I’ll post some photos, looks like the previous gut just cut the lines off so maybe I am going to alright....

It appears that the pump may need rebuilding due to contamination though. Holes are not plugged. Maybe best to get one already Rebuilt?

Apparently, the system wasn't working and someone cut the lines and looped the "left" and "right" steering "motor" ports with a hose so the tractor could continue to be used with "Armstrong" steering".

Are the other ends of the lines missing from the steering valve, if NOT couplings could be brazed to the remaining four parts of the two lines and hoses used to complete them, or hoses with compression repair couplings at both ends.

Since the P.S. was disabled by a P.O. that would seem to indicate it wasn't working or was leaking too badly to keep oil in it.

One would have to disassemble the pump and check it out closely for wear and damage. With the lines cut, it would have been run without oil, so it may not be pretty.

Also, the problem that made them disable it could be in the "pin and ramp" area I wrote about earlier, making it steer in one direction uncontrollably.

I wish I could inspect it once disassembled and offer a somewhat "educated" opinion as to what all it needs.

Don't suppose you are lucky enough to have someone with some experience with this setup nearby?

This pedestal looks like it is out of alignment. My service
manual doesn’t address this. Any thoughts on how to realign
this pedestal?
