adding power steering

Can power steering be added to a 641 Workmaster without major work. In other words, is it a bolt on operation with readily available parts, or will I have to fabricate, etc. I don't need it bad enough to go through a lot of time and money but it would come in handy some times with the bucket loader on soft ground.

SGF:

The choices are:

1. Retrofit with a factory power steering set up from a salvage yard. The problem with this option is most such "kits" are incomplete and/or worn out.

2. An aftermarket kit from, e.g., Jacksonpowersteering.com. These kits are available and have been given good reviews. They are not inexpensive and are NOT recommended for use with front end loaders.

3. Sell your tractor and buy another with PS. This is probably the most cost effective option for most folks.

SGF; I put a power steering unit from Jackson Power Steering on my 850 which has a FEL. The problem with most after market units is an issue of clearance for the cylinders and the FEL frame. This was not a problem. The unit works great. It is powered off the front loader pump. The power unit bolts to the top of the steerimg gear assembly after removal of the column. It takes a little bit of work but is not difficult. You can call Mr. Jackson and talk directly to him. He has been great to work with. Let him know what you are doing and he'll help you out. The cost is around $1,200. A few things to consider is; 1. will you ever use your tractor with the loader off? If so, go original because you'll still need the pump for hyd power. With the original set up the pump will be on the engine. 2. How original do you want to keep your tractor? Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the great input. I'm shocked to hear the price. I converted a Dodge Power Wagon some years back and I think it cost me $200. I had no idea it would be so pricey. I think manual steering and I will become good friends.
