Adjusting points on John Deere520

I have replaced two 6 volt batteries with one 12 volt which needs to be put in backwards in a John Deere 520. What adjustments need to be made to the points? It is not running correctly. Thanks, in advance!

If you reversed the polarity, you'll need to polarize the generator and reverse the primary wires on the ignition coil.

Unless you want to run modern polarity sensitive accessories, like a radio, etc., it might be easier to get longer battery cables and keep it positive ground.

The ignition points would remain the same.

When you say "put in backwards" do you mean keeping it the same as original which was Positive Ground or are you reversing from original polarity over to Neg ground ???????????

Points are no different but if you reverse from POS to NEG ground you swap coil and ammeter leads and polarize the genny prior to start up and hope the VR is suitable for NEG ground ???

If not running correctly perhaps it just needs a general tune up ??

Pertronix makes an excellent points replacement . Just make sure the chassis polarity and electronics module match .
There comes a time to send the carb to a professional shop and have all the multiple tiny secret passages cleaned . A pair of solvent and compressed air will not do the task.
Any leaks or cracks on or around the intake manifold ?
A 195F is required as they do not run well when cold .
Valve lash ?

Bolt the battery connection to chassis to a casting instead of to the thin sheet metal battery box .
Install a new distributer bushing and a pertronix . Make certain advance weights are not stuck .
Factory was Positive Ground/Chassis which has surprised many persons while jump starting .
