Advice on byuing a 1085

We would like advice on buying a 1085 that we've looked at recently. The tractor is in good shape and starts good and also runs good but is very hard to steer. The power steering must be out and I suspect that the power steering pump will need to be replaced. There is no Front End Loader, but we would like to put one on it. The owner is asking $6200 for it.

Our questions:

1. Is there only the one power steering pump on the side?

2. Do you have any tips or advice on repairing the power steering?

3. Are there any special problems or difficulties when installing a Front End Loader (FEL) on the 1085?

4. What brand of FEL do you recommend for the 1085?

5. Is the asking price reasonable given the power steering problems?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

we had a 285, which is the utility version of the 1085. You need to be careful with the pump, add it could have contaminated the rest of the steering system and that will need to be flushed out, and it may still have crap in the system after.

As far as loaders, there are a number of good brands. Westendorf.stands out to me as one of the best, but a Massey loader, Koyoker, or any other brand would be fine.

I'd probably replace all the bushings and bearings in the front axle if putting a loader on, and don't be afraid to grease it once in a while.

Price wise, that seems pretty steep. Ours sold last year at auction for $4600 after I bid it up myself because it was going too cheap. No steering issues, but it did have a few other issues that needed some attention.

Wish I still had the pic . I sold one with factory cab 2 yrs ago for $ 8500. Was in excellent shape and like new rubber and no mech. problems accept air needed serviced.

Randy,
Did you have a FEL on your 1085? If yes, what brand of FEL did you have and was the FEL hard to install?

There have been at least 3 sold in this area at auction lately and none have brought over $5000. One was an excellent tractor.
