Advice on selling tractor.

Well I finally bought a newer tractor and I am going to sell my two old tractors.

One of them has nothing mechanically wrong and new paint, I don't think I will have any problems selling it.

The other has no paint, a leaky fuel line and maybe a leaky head gasket. The funny thing is this is my better tractor. Anyway, I'm trying to decide if I should sell it as is and let the buyer know what is wrong or have a friend fix the known problems and try to get more money for the tractor.

Will I be able to get my money back fixing the tractor (it is ugly!) or do I just take less money. I'm thinking less money as I am short of parking spots in the barn.

Any opinions welcome.

Well, i would fixit myself. Head gaskets are not very expensive. Paint isnt either. Last i checked fuel line isnt very bad. I'd go for it.

I guess its not true in your case, but someone told me "A used tractor/car sale is over when both people think they screwed the other one"

You didn't take time to fix it before, why bother now? Spend the time maintaining your "new" tractor. Let the buyer see what they are getting and decide for themselves how they want to fix it. I would fix the fuel leak for saftey sake though

If I was in your shoes I would sell as is..Be honist and let the person know what is wrong. If you have it fixed your able to get yourself into a mess and have it cost more then what you thought and you'll never get your money back. There may be a reason for that gasket leaking and it will take more then just slapping on a new gasket. I myself would sooner buy a tractor "as is" that way I know what was wrng and HOW it was fixed other then going on someone elses words. Another thing when it comes to paint alot of people are different. Sometimes i see a not so nice paint job thrown on a tractor and it may have been nicer just left alone. If the future owner is not pleased with the paint in his mind he is thinking about doing it all over and how much time and money is involved and walk away before a deal is made. Just my 2 cents worth.

I always consider what i have invested. If i bought too high, i better do some fixing to try to get some return. If i bought low and price to sell, good for me and the buyer. I always liked this hobby more when it was affordable, wasn't ever trying to do more than not spend too much. The people are the good part, the money can go to someone else, just my opinion. If i can not loose any money on them, that's all i need. If i can upgrade, it surely will cost something.

Restoring an AMC Gremlin makes no sense. You put thousands into it, and it's only worth hundreds, and only on a good day.

Restoring a Cuda on the other hand, that can pay you back handsomly.

So is this tractor a Cuda or a Gremlin?

It's a Ford both literally and figuratively. 851 with loader, working ps, new tires and pie weights.

Not worth nothing but getting pretty well used up.

I never cared about the paint.

I've put new tires on it, replaced the hydrolic lines, had the ps pump worked over, replaced the water lines, replaced the spindles and other routine things.

I bought a commercial mower this spring and just used it for some light grading over the summer. Hooked up the bush hog to clear some brush and noticed the fuel line and the next day noticed some black grime in the water.

Unfortunately, fixing the fuel line and getting to the head gasket requires pulling the front loader and tin, and I'm not really set for doing that here, thus the significant cost factor.

I didn't pay alot for the tractor and I don't expect to get alot for it, buy on the other hand, I don't want to just give it away.

One thing I know, I don't have to be the smartest person in the room if I can learn from other people's experience.

as a buyer, i'd prefer you sold it as is and advised me of what was wrong. may need a head gasket, ok, i'd rather pull the head off myself, while i'm in there i may grind the valves or re-ring it. then i have the opportunity to see how the rest of the motor is. if you just replace the head gasket , and the head is warped a little, it will leak again, now its coming apart for a second time. or sell it and give the buyer the option, needs head gasket- price say 1000.00, if you want me to fix it, price 1500.

Well... if you don't have much in it, sell it as is. You don't know what you're getting into with the engine. That could be like opening up Pandora's Box.... IF you can get a figure you're comfortable with "as is", and not really set up to do the repairs yourself, then sell it as is and be done of it.

Sadly, it's worth more in parts than as a tractor. Complete, working factory p/s system will get you maybe $1000. Complete set of pie weights may bring $500. Loader? I don't know. It must be worth something. Cylinder head free of cracks is worth $200 or more. I sold a Jubilee hood (which was admittedly next to perfect) for $700 and got another $300 for the grille. Your hood may not be as pretty but if complete is still probably worth $300. A pair of headlights brings $50 all the time.
