Hi Jim;

There is supposed to be a cork gasket where the cup meets the upper cannister. Just in case this happened to you, my filter leaked after cleaning it. Couldn't figure out where the leak was coming from after making sure the gasket was on and the cup seated properly. Then I found a pin hole in the cup. A little spot weld and no leak.

Most craft stores and walmarts sell 'cut to fit' cork gaskets. ( you just have to buy the sheet and cut your's out! ) But yeah.. buying them is soooo much easier.

Jim:

Though there is indeed a gasket between the oil cup and the filter housing, the cup will not leak oil without one if filled to the proper level. The gasket is readily available online by the way.

If you cleaned accumulated dirt from the bottom of your oil cup it is likely that you have exposed one or more pin holes that have long been filled with dirt.

It is common for these oil cups to have pin holes beneath the accumulated dirt formed by corrosion due to condensation.

Remove yours, clean it out and hold it to a bright light to find pin holes. They can easily be soldered or brazed.

There is a good chance you're right Dean, I had to scrape the crud off the cup it was so bad.

It was hard for me to believe the tractor was still running after seeing the breather. I swear I don't believe it has ever been cleaned. It had maybe two inches of filler.Thanks for the advice.

If the hurricane don't get us I will try to check it out this weekend.
