Air cleaner

Couple of questions while the exhaust manifold is off I decided to clean the engine got to this -- the air cleaner I'm guessing I opened the bottom it's filled with Oil? Is that how it's supposed to be ? I was thinking maybe a filter. Just dump it and hand clean or take the whole thing off?

The bottom has oil in it up to the fill line on the side.
That traps the dirt. No paper filter.
Dump (recycle) the old oil, clean it good, replenish with
new oil. What you put in the engine is fine.
The mesh and air tubes inside the top half should be
cleaned too. You can dunk the whole thing in diesel.
You can download the owner/operators manual that
covers all the regular maintenance items for free.

I cleaned the air filter by soaking it in a 5 gal bucket of kerosene for a few hrs.
Then rinsed it out over and over until the kerosene ran clean. Then let it drain over night.
Works good, was very dirty
Be sure to change air filter oil a couple of times a year.

The mesh can be removed and cleaned/replaced (nnalert). DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL!! The oil is only there to collect dirt not for lube.

Ken,
I was told not to try and take the wire mesh out of
the filter. Was very difficult to get back in?????
So I did not try, however, soaking it worked fine,
then letting it completely drain.

Whatever method is used, most old air filters are
full of dirt and need to be cleaned.

Tip for getting the mesh back into filter housing after cleaning.... Wrap duct tape around the tube end and make a "cone" for the mesh to slide over (helps stop the mesh from hanging up on tube end).

(quoted from post at 11:16:04 11/23/13) Ken,

How do you get the bottom off so you can replace the mesh without destroying the housing?

WOW Ken I can not (well maybe I can) believe how skeered these boys are at taking that mesh out... Soaking it in 5 gal. of whutever is not gonna clean it... All it will do is waist 5 gal. of whutever and your time... Those that have un-rolled that mesh will tell ya its dirt/sand, straw, grass whutever that is trapped in the mesh that no 5 gal of whutever will break down...

No doubt dunking it in a bucket will not get everything out.
But in the case of these air filters, partially cleaned is better
than not cleaned at all. Or worse, simply unhooked.
