AIR CONDITIONING QUESTION

I HAVE A JD 2140 CAB TRACTOR AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER FIXED ALOT OF STUFF ON THE AC, A NEW COMPRESSOR AND NEW LINES, HE SAID IT WAS WORKING, WHICH IT IS, YOU CAN HEAR IT KICK ON AND IT BLOWS COOL BUT NOT REALLY AS COLD AS IT SHOULD, WOULD IT JUST NEED MORE FREON? HOW CAN YOU TELL IF ITS R12 OR R134A?

should be a label on ti somewhere as to the freon type. As to shy not cold enough ? first thing are both coils good anc clean. If they are it will take someone with gauges and knowledge to determine the cause. could be too little freon, too much, or a few other problems.

If it needs freon it could be b/c of a leak in the system somewhere. For that you"d have to shoot some dye in it and black light it to find the spot. Might check your filters, and condensor for crud, make sure they are clean. As to what type look at the fittings under a cap by the compressor. If they seem to look like a screw on type thats R-12, if it is a quick connector like a air hose connector its R-134a., also like IH said look for a label on the compressor or the reciever dryer maybe.

Most tractors or anything ag that age hasn't had the hood off in a while so the radiator and condenser can be completely washed out. Smaller tractors have smaller condensers and when plugged with dirt and chaff won't cool well. Lift cab top or take filters out and peek into evaporator core and clean it out it's probably plugged full of trash too. They make spray or pour solution that gets the mold, mildew and smell out of the evaporator too and then you rinse with water and blow it out with air. Then if that doesn't help start looking at other things. Too much R134A is worse than not enough and it won't cool either so don't just go adding without checking other things first.
