Air Purifier

Anyone have any recommendations ? How about the electrostatic ones you can clean so you don't have to buy filters all the time. Maybe one built into the furnace.

Mike,
Many years ago my dad had one in his furnace. I remember hearing a snap when something big went through it. Sounded like a bug zapper.

If I remember it used 250-300 watts. Do the math, In the long run it may be cheaper to replace an expensive hepa filter. Not sure if the power was on filter all the time. Been a long time ago before hepa filters were common on residential furnaces.

They need considerable maintenance. The power supplies are much more efficient than the early examples. They are not able to remove gaseous pollution, just particles unless equipped with real filters. We use a Smog Hog Electrostatic over our Plasma torch. It is a marvel but weighs 800 pounds and takes 29 amps. research is best.. if it is not connected to electricity, it is not really a collector. Devices that replace a regular filter are not real. We have a built-in electrostatic one ........
and I added a 2" fiberglas disposable filter downstream from the electrostatic.

Cleaning the electrostatic elements is a tedious job - we let the elements dry before reinstalling.

The fiberglas filter picks up enough to show you that the electronic is not 100%.

If I had to do it again it would be a 4" hi-end disposable filter - no electronic filter.

'll second that cleaning job! In fact after a few years of it, I stopped using it for that reason.

If I'm not mistaken, the electronic ones drop whatever they had collected IF the power goes off. Then the next time the fan runs, it picks up all that stuff and sends it back into the house.

I had an electrostatic filter on my forced air oil furnace.
I disconnected it as you could always detect an unpleasant ozone odor in the house.
I just run a 4" thk HEPA filter now.
