Don't want to start a tire war, but what tires do you have on that hard pulling trailer? There was a welder here who used to pull loads of steel out of Texas. He couldn't stop talking about when he changed tires and got some thing like 4 or 5 miles more. If I remember right he went to Michlan steel belt radials. Might have been those 10 ply and lots of pressure. Personally, I think you were doing OK--we have to pay for we want.

Michelin has put a lot of research into making tires that have lower rolling resistance. I do doubt 4 to 5 gallons per mile more, but maybe 1.

It's looks to me that Alan's mileage is good - considering the work being done.

As to the big fuel-mileage gain with the tires? I don't believe it for a second. I've heard many such stories over the years - and not one of them panned out. Such claims are usually based on wishful thinking - and/or poor math.

Hauling equipment and such over the roads for a good while. You can get better mileage if the tires are inflated to the proper or 5-10 lbs above, than if the tire pressure was 5lbs or more low..

Also newer tires will help with mileage..

not a great big difference in mileage unless you are going long distance though.
