Allis 390 haybine

I recently purchased an Allis Chalmers 390 haybine and it did not come with a hydraulic cylinder to raise and lower the header. Does anybody have one of these or have knowledge of what size cylinder or part number it needs?

They look like a common 2 1/2" x 8", one way cylinder & shouldn't be too difficult to find. May also want to ask down on the Allis board.

Implements in those days were designed to use a standard 8" stroke ASAE hydraulic cylinder. This was because cylinders were extremely expensive so a farmer could only afford to own one or two.

You can use any common 8" stroke ASAE style cylinder, but make sure it's an ASAE type with 2" of threaded end which the clevis threads on to. A common two-way cylinder can be made into a one-way by installing a vent in the "retract" port of the cylinder.
