Allis-Chalmers B?

Hey all, I'm believe i have a model b, but would like help from the experts to be certain. I bought this at auction mainly for the rear tires as they fit my cub. I'll be parting the rest out but want to make sure I know what I'm selling before I ship parts. This is all a have. No grill, hood to help identify it. Has a fairly complete sickle mower, all four cylinders are locked up hard. We do have the head and rocker assembly. Gas tank is in good shape. Anything else on these are hard to find, desirable items?

If you have a Model B the serial number starting with the letter "B" will be stamped on a flat area just to the rear of the gear shifter. Get that info and go to serial number section on this site. There you can find the correct year of the tractor.

Thanks, you are correct. I ran the numbers last year when I bought it and looking at pictures assumed it was a b then

came up with a late '48. I didn't see the "b" stamp under the paint/rust until you mentioned it today. That solves it. Thanks!!

I have parts and piece that would fit that since I have 2 or 3 C for parts

There are so many of them around parts aren't hard to find. If the fuel tank really is good, that's saleable. The aftermarket distributor drive is saleable. Unfortunately it's missing the distributor. I wouldn't consider a 1948 a late model, but with the C rear wheels and the straight front axle it looks like a late model.

Mower seems to be missing the cutting bar (the flat bar that moves and holds the blades), but I've got a couple random international harvester ones floating around that might adapt. Also seems to be missing whatever drives the blades. Hard to tell what else since it's buried in snow. If you want to make it up to nw washinton we can take the mower off and it's yours.

Engine block doesnt have the cracks between the cylinders that I've read was a common thing with these.

Not looking to make a bunch of money from it, I only paid 120 for it and I only wanted the 9.5-24 wheels and tires for my cub. I absolutely hate seeming usable parts get scrapped so if someone needs any of this let me know.

The mower will fit a B, C, and CA. The bellhousing mount brackets that are bent to the rear make it fit the CA with it's longer wheel base. On a CA they bolt to the mower frame further to the front of the frame. Hard to tell for sure but the PTO shaft with the pulley on it looks to be 1 1/8", later ones were 1 3/8". The boot on the shift lever looks like it MIGHT be OK, if not it can let water into the transmission. How long has it been exposed to to the weather with a bad (?) boot? The engine can likely be rebuilt with a liner and piston kit, and other standard rebuilding procedures. There is some steel frame work extending forward from the mower frame that isn't part of the mower.

Some CA had double pulley 2 belts vrs one.

Yes, possibly the mowers for the 1 3/8" pto shaft. I have one of these but don't know whey they changed over from one to two. The pulleys for the two belts were both smaller in diameter than the single belt pulleys.

Maybe pulleys used on pull type mowers and all crop harvester, which are adjustable with shims? Are the later, smaller, double pulleys fixed, or adjustable?

I think they were fixed and you lowered the rear frame to tighten the belts. There seems to be some differences in the CA version of the mower.

The shifter boot is an old one from an Oliver super 55. The transmission is frozen right now. I bought this exactly a year ago, I had to drag it off the trailer. I moved it during the summer and it rolled fine. Ya the front of the mower looks like some homemade stuff. Couple pieces of flat bar holding it.

Not sure it's all "B". I don't believe most "B"s had starter capability. It was possible to take the bell housing portion off a "C" to get starter capability.

I do believe that most if not all the later B's did have electric start. I know the first tractor I ever drove was my Grandpa's B and it definetly was factory electric start. I'm not sure but most of the B's I've seen with foot brakes have had electric start.

Could be. Grandpa's "B" did not have electric start ability and now that I think about it may have had hand brakes.

It is a B. Any B with those rear hubs would have had starters as well as an adjustable front axle. Both items would be more saleable than those on the regular run of the mill B's
