Allis Chalmers Tractors

When I see an AC tractor with the letters WD or WD-45, what does the "WD" stand for. Tried to google it but never could find what it stands for. Thanks, fortyniner.

I asked on the AC forum..should know soon.Might be like the Chevy W/T..somebody said that means with tires...

Thanks Tom, I will watch for your postings for the answer. Have asked around here locally and no one around here seems to know either. One farmer told me maybe "Wide Drive" but he was laughing at the same time he said it to. Watch him be right!!

I found a little info and never really came out and said it but would not be surprised if the WD designated the wide front..

The WD like a lot of other company's was just a letter they used like the JD-A or the Farmall H. Now the WD45 the 45 did mean something and that was Allis said the WD45 had 45 HP but in the neb test it was more like 43hp

Would you believe few and far between that any had wide fronts and the most common for a WD is the 2 wheel trike set up. Same with the WD45 few had factory wide fronts but where an optoin on both but like most options they cost more so few spent the money for them

Allis B was the first tractor I ever drove. Was always amazed that the power units for the Ferris Wheel and Tilt a Whirl, etc at the county fair were the same front half of a tractor that we had.
ACWDs were rugged, reliable machines. Some folks find them ungainly, uncomfortable, unhandy and undesirable. But they sold a lot of them and they earned their place in the tractor hall of fame. They're just a drawbar tractor but properly equipped will outwork and usually outlast an N by about 2 to 1.
Sad part is they only will fetch about half the price of an N no matter how much you sink into one. To people who are just looking for an old roust about tractor I say that pound for pound and dollar for dollar you can buy more tractor with a WD than many makes and models - especially Ford.
One of the things i like best about them is there is none of the phissing and whining about their electrics.
Simple, utilitarian, dependable and cheap.
So of course they get converted to 12V

The WD was the follow up tractor to the WC. The WD 45 they increased the horsepower to 45 hp. no real logical progression to the lettering system

I had a WD was/is a good tractor, (son has it now). I gave it up mostly because it was 3 steps up to seat, and the Ford was just swing leg over.
The WD and WD45 and other Allis Chalmers' had there own " 3point hook=up" a lot different but good. I was/am proud to have owned an Allis Chalmers Tractor. They had a factory in nearby LaPorte,Indiana.
