DR.ALLIS, WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF THE AIR OR ENERGY CELLS IN THE HEAD.REMOVED HEAD TO REPLACE BLOWN HEAD GASKET,WILL REDO VALVES AND ETC.WHILE HEAD IS OFF.ANY INPUT YOU GIVE ABOUT ENERGY CELLS,HEAD GASKET PART NO.WAS 4514379-1 OR ANY OTHER ITEMS THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AT THIS TIME

Energy cells, or pre-combustion chambers, create a higher compression in the cell kind of like a vortex. The injector sprays fuel across the main
combustion chamber into the cell and the cell causes the fuel to ignite due to the increased heat in it. This system doesn't require the higher
compression of a direct injection engine. You wil usually find beefier internal parts in a direct injection engine due to the higher compression ratio.

I would clean out the insides of
the energy cells without
removing them if possible. If
removed from the head they must
be lapped in with valve lapping
compound or they will leak. They
require a special puller. If
memory serves they are 7/8 fine
thread to pull them. If they
were working properly and are
not full of carbon leave them
alone is my advise.

46 years ago, my Mentor told me " leave those da#$ energy cells alone. If it was running alright before, it will run just fine when you get done" !!!

I will add that the energy cell tends to cut down on diesel
?knock? because the combustion process occurs partially
inside the cell and has to go out the opening into the cylinder.
I disagree a little on the compression issue. Cold Starting a
diesel with indirect injection is more difficult because there is
more metal to heat up. DI is easier starting, but also burns a
little ?dirtier?.
