ALLIS Model C ignition systems

The Allis C I've owned for about 30 years now has a non-magneto ignition with a distributor mounted horizontal. If my memory is correct it seems like when I purchased cap rotor points etc. the parts were actually for an IH tractor (it's been a really long time). This particular distributor has a two piece set of points with the ground portion being a simple little L-shaped bracket.

Any tips on locating parts?

I'm consider purchasing a different C and want to avoid a magneto. Most of the ones I see have a vertical distributor. Is that the most common setup?

Does your distributor look like a magneto? If so, it is likely a Fairbanks-Morse FM-T4B according to the AGCO parts book for the C. They do not show the parts, just to order parts from Fairbanks- Morse. Is there a tag on it or any identification info stamped into the housing?

It looks like this site's store has some parts. You might want to call them. Brillman's or McDonald Carb and Ignition are a couple more to check with.

You have to identify it delco, wico, etc. Alot of tractors can be switched to many 4 or 6 cylinder distributors.

From your description most likely you have an IH distributor, parts should be no problem, I can post back with some numbers that should be available through most any auto parts store.

The vertical distributors are likely Delco and the same thing goes for parts availability for those.

I had a CA a few years ago with a vertical distributer conversion. More luck than good sense, the previous owner stuffed the paperwork in the tool box. It listed the same part number fits all "LETTER SERIES" Allis (B-C-CA-WD-WD45), Case, & IHC(A-B-C-H-M) model tractors. HTH.

You could also check with DJS Tractor Parts. He is heavily into AC parts.

I am open to correction, but I think many tractors had the same magneto mounting and there was a company making distributor conversion units to replace magnetos. I have one sitting on the shelf with a distributor no. (delco 1111411), that is listed for several different tractors. I believe it will fit the Allis Chalmers tractors I have. Infact the B looks to have one of these units on it. It had red paint on it when I bought it so it may have been on a Farmall. The distributor is upright, cap on top.

Definitely looks different than that. Guess I’ll have to clean things up and look for some identification. Didn’t realize there were so many ignition options. Never had much luck posting pictures here.

There are a number of possibilities. Post a picture of the distributor and one with the cap off showing the points and condenser.

Does it look like the vertical Delco Remy distributor except it is mounted horizontally? If so, it may use the same points, condenser, etc., as those were common parts used in a number of DR distributors.

If that's not it is a kissin' cousin. I looked it over again today and couldn't find any identification on it. I'm not sure that it doesn't need a new bushing on the shaft----it kind of sloppy.
