I see now my alternator is narrower than the tractors pulleys and they make a wider one to go on the Alt...before I go boogerin things up I thought I would check here first, does the pulley on the alt just unscrew ? and it comes off or do I need to insert a pin to hold something to keep it all from spinning ?...or ?...
48, 8n, front mount, early with 12v conversion, new alt
Thanks

An air impact wrench will loosen it without having to hold anything. If you try and bind it, you could break something - been there done that.

+1 to air impact wrench works wonders, i normally leave the belt on and take it off when the nut gets loose. IF you dont have an impact wrench take the alt off and go to a shop they would probably do it for free

(quoted from post at 18:41:09 03/30/10) ditto on the impact wrench.. works good..

K, I think I have an impact wrench somewhere around here, it does come off counter clockwise correct ?

should come off reverse of how the alt spins.. IE.. engine spinning her won't spin the nut loose.

AND . ,. ,. when you get your new pulley with the correct belt width, make sure it is a SMALL pulley - diameterwise. The pulleys that are the same size as your original d.c. generator will turn your alternator too slow, and you will lose the advantage of charging at idle speeds. I try to find the smallest doameter pulley I can for the belt size.
