I have a 851 ford that has been change over to a 12V with a three wire Alt. The bat. will not stay up very long. Put on new amp. gauge, new wire from hot post on Alt. to amp. gauge and on to hot side of bat. New wire from #2 post of Alt. to hot post of Alt. New wire from Alt. #1 post to idiot lite and on to the switch key. When I start the tractor the idiot lite come on and stay on and will not go out after the motor start. Amp. gauge does not show charge nor discarge. Check Atl. @ hot post for curent it has 12 plus amps coming out. Can someone please help me with some advise......... Thanks Larry

1, the lamp should come on when the key is on, and ideally, go out when you start up and get over 400 rpm.

2, I think you used your meter wrong and checked votlage, not amps.. and it's normal to read voltage onthe alt terminal.

3, you may have the ignition wired to the wrong side of the ammeter.. it has to be on the side with the alt.

4, I'd say the alt is bad if the battery needs to be jumped and dies often..

from the description of your wiring it sounds to be correct couple of checks that may locate a simple problem, remove 2 wire plug check for corrosion on terminals, check #2wire for voltage should be hot all the time,turn ign on idiot light shouldn't light when unplugged if it does something else is feeding off it or it has a shortage ,check for voltage at #1 terminal while turned on, also check alt bat terminal for voltage and alt grd if all these check ok sounds like the alt is your problem

Thinks Guys I was leaning toward the Alt been bad
but I needed for it to be conf. I will double check tomorrow

Light no go out says bad alternator that is why the light is there to say hey I work or I do not work and your light is saying I do not work I.E. alternator

Should be easy enough to get checked at most auto parts stores nowadays. Simple way to tell, then go from there. Please report back one way or other.
