Alternator hook up

Folks, Is it possible to pull the plastic plug where the excitor and sensor wires connect on a single wire version of a Delco 10si and connect up the wires, making it a 3 wire? Are the connections in there?
Would it work?

It will have to be taken apart and reworked.
Here is an example of what was done to a 2 wire to change it into a one wire.
There is a good site with insrtucions with pictures that show what is done to a Delco 3 wire to a 1 wire but I can"t find it at the moment.

I may be wrong on my last post. I know they use a different regulator when they convert to a one wire but a fellow told me he thinks it may still work as a 3 wire. We"ll have to wait to hear from an electrical expert and we"ll both learn someting new.
 
Nope. Wrong regulator inside. Also, if you install the standard regulator, you don't need a three wire hookup for a farm tractor. Since the battery is so close to the alternator, two wire is all that is needed.
 
my te 20 has a three wire on it which i am going have to redue.instead of one solid wire it is pieced togather.on my alternater it has a two wire plug on it besides the terminal.one of the wires from the plug is ran into the wire going to the terminal.is this right.how should it be wired als the tractor has a ampmeter on it.is there a 6 volt and a 12 volt one if so how can i tell which one mine is.my tractor has been switched to a 12 volt.
 
Looking at the back of the alternator, the top plug has #1 terminal on the left and #2 on the ritht. Down below is the big post for output.

#1 is for the exciter wire and gets hooked to a power source that only comes on when the IGN is turned on. This is the wire that needs a diode or resistor stuck in, or you won't be able to shut of the tractor. A 50 watt diode works fine, and I usually hook in two in parallel. You can buy cheap at Radio Shack. With an "idiot light" system, the light bulb acts as a resistor to prevent current backfeed - but does not always work. Diode works much better.

#2 is battery voltage sensor wire. On a tractor, you can just hook it to the big output post on the back of the alternator. It gets power all the time.

Big output post hooks to battery positive, and if you have an amp gauge, it runs through it. Any other electric loads in the system get hooked to the side of the amp gauge going to the alternator and NOT the side going to battery postive.

Amp gauge doesn't care if 6 volt or 12 volt. It just reads twice as high on 6 volts. Main thing is to have an amp gauge big enough. An alternator will easily spike to 50 amps, so your amp gauge should at least go to 50. You also need wire big enough to carry the current.
