Alternator problems on a 756

I'm having some trouble with the charing system on a 756. New alternator and regulator now.

I thought I had the wiring figured out. Mended some broken connections and reattached some wires. Used the book. Thought i was right. Next after running the tractor a few hours the Alternator light started blinking and the alternator and battery was hot. I had a new alternator I put on and it gets warm quick and was charging above 15 volts. I then changed the regulator. It just buzzes i shut it off and that leads me here. I tried to wire around the harness and same thing. Spade 1 to F, Spade 2 to R, Spade 3 to positve batt. and 4 to a test light to positive batt. What am I missing? Thanks for the help.
I also have the resistor in between 3 and 4 and all grounded.

The system is pretty isolated from all others (not interconnected). Looking at 56 series diagrams, it seems likely that a wire is cross connected, or the new regulator is bad. Once they get hot, they can really be difficult to repair. I don't like the mechanical regulated alternators at all due to the maintenance and wear of the points. If you are making it as original as possible, keep at it. If not, a delco 12si is a easy three wire install. Bob M diagrams gives the scoop on that simple conversion. Jim
