i have a 1981 ford e350 van, 300 six cylinder, with a 30 ft bucket. the batteries are not charging. i just had the alternator tested and it
works fine. i would like to set the alternator up like the gm 10 si alternator with a 3 wire set up. can it be done with this alternator and how
would it be wired? the van never goes on the road. used for tree trimming and working on bins. here is a picture of the alternator.

i looked for an external v reg and could not locate one. the guy at the auto parts store said this one has an internal regulator. where would
the v reg be located. i checked the firewall, under the battery, under the dash and did not find one. the van does have an aftermarket dura
van lift 30 ft boom with an insulated bucket. it was an old electrical contractors van.

I can't help you with location, but that (90 Amp, I think) older Ford/Motorcraft alternator does NOT have an internal regulator.

i will have to do more hunting and see where its hidden. when the boom lift was installed, they added a lot of extra wiring. there are
solenoids that switch automatic between battery sets to run the boom. i suspect then that components got moved around.

glennster,

Fallow the field wire that is the exciter circuit,

Guido.

Check around the starter solenoid area, maybe tucked down behind the battery. Those regulators are about 3 inches square and only about an inch high.

Look between the battery and headlight on the right side.

YI . Your alternator is a Ford 1G with an external regulator as the others have said. No, it cannot be used as a 3 wire set up. However you can easily up grade to a Ford 2G or 3G alternator, with internal voltage regulator.
