52, 8N side mount. 12 volt. I rescently posted about my battery smelling and leaking some acid. Thanks to all who replied. I took the battery and alternator to napa to have tested and both tested bad so I guess the alternater has been overcharging the battery longer than I thought.I plan to replace both but dont know about the alternator. It has a plug with 2 wires and 2 more wires that attach to the back. The only markings on the alt. is Delco 15R. The guy at napa said it was a chevy alt. Guess I need help knowing what to replace it with.

Bair.......most popular 12V alternator is the Delco 10-SI 'cuz it has the built-in voltage regulator. It is a "3-wire" unit and is very simple to wire-up and CHEAP. ($20 tested at the junque yard)

Some think the 1-wire is better 'cuz after all 1-wire is simpler than 3-wires, eh? Problem with the 1-wire is you haffta jazz yer cold engine to almost full throttle (1800rpms) before it will start charging. Cold engines and full throttle is receipt for rods thru the block. The 3-wire will start charging at about 600rpms.

HTH.......Dell a 12V advocate for the right reasons. That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 52-8N. And I know 8-ways to convert and they all work the first time.

Fine a new parts man, pronto! :(

Dell, do you know if this is the 10-SI? The tractor was already 12 volt but I dont know if all Delco alternators that hook up this way will work. I have not looked for another yet mainly cause I dont know for sure what to look for.

I'll make it very simple for you so simple that any body who can talk can get the correct one. Ask your parts guy for an alternator that will fit a 1980 Chev pick up with no power any thing and no AC. He will give you one that is around 40 amps and should cost you less then $50 with your core.

While YOU would want the 37 or 42 amp 10SI so it draws less horsepower from your 25 hp motor , most parts store I have found give you the free up grade to the 63 amp alt . I recon they only have to stock a few this way .

(quoted from post at 23:02:04 10/29/10) Dell, do you know if this is the 10-SI? The tractor was already 12 volt but I dont know if all Delco alternators that hook up this way will work. I have not looked for another yet mainly cause I dont know for sure what to look for.

They are EZ to repair and check,,, I don't know why anyone would remove it to have it checked... its bolted to the engine check it their... course you need a good battery...

I would install the new bat install the alt and recheck... You will need a voltmeter and mite as well use the useless amp gauge that's on the tractor,,, all its needed for is to test the rated max amp output,,, tho I doubt yer tractor engine is capable of churning out.... That make it still useless... a voltmeter is really all you need...

I also guarantee it not the first are last that a parts store rejected that mite B good...

Thank you all. You have answered my question and then some. Along with the alternator I will need to purchace a volt meter as there is no ammeter on the tractor.

Industry standard part number is a 7127M-3, M-9, or M-12. The difference is the clock position for the wiring harness. Any of these would work, although you may need to loosen the case bolts and pull the front forward just enough to rotate the front case a bit. You'll have to swap pulleys anyway, so that's the time to "clock" the alternator. These alternators are popular from about 1972 on up into the 1980's.

Dell, you gets what you pay for in one wire alternators. The el cheapo ones may need to get jazzed to high rpms to kick in, but for a few more bucks you can get one that will match the 600 you mentioned easily. Im talking $40 vs. $55 new off the shelf.
