would like to know the proper way to hook up a amp meter gauge when using a one wire alternator. voltage regulator is built in
thanks in advance Butch

Assuming this alternator is - ground, the coil polarity also has to be swapped unless somebody already connected it backwards. - to points and + to ignition switch. Ammeter - terminal to wire coming from battery/starter. Should add a 30 amp breaker to that line if it"s a 35 amp alternator. Too much alternator capacity will make for hot factory sized wires if the battery is low.Ammeter + is connected to both the alternator and the power supply to the ignition/light switch. The one wire alternator may have problems self exciting at low Rpm"s. A three wire is a superior system. Actually the late 20amp generator used on the later 50,60 and 70 have oodles of capacity.

The Alternators output PLUS all loads like Lights and Ignition etc., wire to the LOAD side,,,,,,,,,,,ONLY the battery (often via a No 10 wire to the starter post where big ungrounded battery cable attaches to switch or solenoids input or even direct to hot ungrounded battery post) attaches to the ammeters other SUPPLY side.

If it registers bass ackwards reverse the leads

If you change a Two Cylinder Deere from its original Positive Ground over to Negative ground to accommodate an Alternator, the ammeter leads would need swapped side to side.

If its a coil ignition and you change Polarity, its leads also need swapped.
