Need wireing diaghram on a 2 wire gm alternater to amp meter to make it show what the battery is reading,I am restoring the 50 8n, have put new gauges in it, but the amp meter was not wired on it before.

koenton......is this the 2-terminal replacement ammeter ...or... the original "loop" OEM ammeter??? Surprizenly enuff, ammeter don't care what the volts are ...nor... what the battery polarity is. (but you care)

Since 50-8N's could have either the 4-nipple frontmount dizzy with "infamous ballast resistor" ...or... 5-nipple sidemount dizzy. Need to know what type of insulated terminal block is on the backside of the dash panel underneath the ammeter.

Simplest way is to connect the alternator BIG STUD output to the same post on the input terminal block as the weaksister ignition switch INPUT. There will also be another wire that goes back to the battery "HOT" post somehow. Simple, eh? ......Dell
 
Dell, The ammeter is too post meter and I have the side mount dist with two wire resister to cut fire down going to points, the bloch on back of panel is just two post block which is not being used. The 8n was rewired when I got it. It didn,t have any wires to the block, if I use the block what wires would need to go to it? Also on ammeter would the big poast wire go to switch and then back to +on battery? Also what size wire would I need for this?

Assuming that by 2-wire alt, you mean a GM Delco 10SI, where the Sense(#2) wire is looped to the output stud AND Excite (#1) is fed from the ignition switch via a small light bulb or a diode, then these are what you need. They are for 1-wire alt, but the #1, #2 connections described above are more than easy enough to add to these diagrams with your pencil.

What you really need is......to replace the amp meter with a volt meter.The 30-30 amp meter will probably peg every time you start your tractor because of the high amps being put out by the alternator compared to the 20 amps the OEM genny was putting out.CAUTION: Voltmeters are not wired into the system the same as an amp meter.IMHO don b1
 
koenton.......many el-cheapo "bubba" 12-volt conversions wire the alternator BIG STUD output to the 8N's starter solenoid BIG battery stud 'cuz its eazier than extending the recommended 12ga stranded wire 2-ft longer to the 2-terminal central electrical and ignition switch connection.

Then they use a 2-terminal 12v-to-6v ceramic converting resistor ($5, cheap) and the original 6-volt roundcan ignition coil instead of squandering $16 (cheap) for a real 12-volt roundcan coil like the NAPA IC14SB. I can't guess how they wired yer 2-wire weaksister ignition switch.

What can I say? I know 8-ways to convert to 12-volts and they all work the first time. I know a gazillion ways that don't work.

While don b concerns about "full scaling" a 30-30 2-terminal ammeter with 12-volt, 65-amp start-up recharge of the "used" battery electrons is "legitimate"; realistically, due to the construction of the modern 2-terminal replacement ammeter, it is NOT a problem. ...nor... is it a problem with the original "loop" ammeter. .......Dell, retired Calibration Lab Engr
 
Yes.....they sure do.Most any 2" dia.voltmeter should fit into the hole where your amp meter is located.I don't think I would go with the digital type tho.I just think looking at a voltmeter would tell me what I need to know about the charging system better than the amp meter.At least,it's similar to what I look at on my truck.Your and others mileage may vary.If you go that route,just be sure it is installed correct or you can let the smoke out of things.
