ampli torc

I just bought a 4star from out of a weed patch.I have it running and it has a slight tap or knock from the amplitorc area.If you put it into low,the noise goes away.The tractor slows down very slightly when you put it into low.I loaded the driveline by applying the brakes and the torc does not slip.It has good distinct snap when going from high to low or low to high.I removed the cover from the adjusting hole and looked in while moving the lever.The entire clutch pack and carrier is moving forward and backward about 1/4 of inch.I have the manual but I was wondering if anyone has seen something like this.I may not fix it and just part the tractor if it this is an expensive repair.Thanks,Moline

1st please dont part a good running MM like you have here, Is there a problem, does the ampli torc work, despite this noise, 40 year old machines make noises, If it works forget it. If not we can help you fix it,

I'm am with JoPro on this one, PLEASE DON'T PART OUT RUNNING TRACTORS!!!!!!!!! I understand it is yours and you can do what you want with it, but the money you would make would not be that much more than selling it whole! You also would not need to take the time to dissasemble the tractor. These are getting more rare by the day, and we can find parts off non-running tractors. I am young and doing everything I can to preserve this hobby. If it ends up being more of a project than you thought it would be, post it here and someone will buy it. Thank you.

I agree with not parting it out. Where are you located? It may just be a chatter or noise from something loose from wear. I agree, if it works just keep an eye on it, if it gets worse then do something with it. There are people who would be interested in it if you do decide to sell it (me included but Ill have to wait in line). As Ive always said someday there will be a pile of parts somewhere with no tractors left to put them on...

Everybody has their own idea as to what is expensive. If that noise is a bother, you need to determine what the noise is before you dive in. It could be as simple as a roll pin. I once had a 445 that the previous owner said had serious transmission issues. It was a fair amount of work to fix but the problem was two broken/missing snap rings. Cost about $1 for the parts to correct the problem.

Hi guys,thanks for the replies.It bugs me to hear noises like that.I just know that it is something being worn or damaged past repair.I dont think the torque is working,there is a very very slight decrease in speed.My M602 has a good drop in speed going into low and jumps right back up when put in high--I can just barely tell that this is doing something.I will probably go ahead and tear it down and see what is making the noise and repair the torc.I was hoping someone had experienced these symptoms and could give me an educated guess as to what is happening (or not happening)in there.I wont put it out of its misery if I can repair it.Thanks again,Moline BTW-I am in east central illinois.
