my mom had this for as long as I can remember, she gave it to me 30+ years ago. do not know where she got it from, probably her dads. Mom viewed me as the son who would take care of things as my older brother was/is the "throw away type".

It's a black powder horn made from a cow's horn. When it was used, there was a small rawhide strap attached around both ends so it could be conventily carried slung over your shoulder. There was also a small plug fashioned to fit in the smsll opening to keep the powder from coming out when being carried.
 
We have one similar to that, but both ends are open. My wife's grandfather was a night hunter, and he used it to call in his hounds. That's an old compass he also carried.

Is that a cap on the small end of yours? The one we have has a mouthpiece carved on it.
