another 12 volt question

i have the alt. mounted finally, and am needing instructions on wireing, its a 50' sidemount, someone has put a ballost resistor on it going to the (-) side of coil, do i leave it? from what i can tell reading on-line i should run the white wire from the plug (#2), to the ammeater,does it matter whitch side? then red (#1) with a resistor that i got from radio shack to the key switch, does it matter whitch side? my neighbor came over and said to just tape up the white wire and run the red to the battery. it can't be that easy can it? also what do i do with the 3 wires that are left over from the 6-v gen? sorry to ask this ,i know it has been gone over so much, i looked for a diagram in 8-n serches but the only one i found had been delited. thanks
