Another 56 planter question

For those who have had this planter, what size hydraulic cylinder was on the planter? The parts manual shows a 2 1/2, 3 and 4 inch by 8 inch cylinder.

Ive tried answering this question, but reading my answers I cant make it not turn into dirty clubhouse comments.....

8 inch is the correct and important part!

2.5 inch will lift faster but not as much weight. Works with a small planter or a newer tractor with more pressure. Might raise the planter pretty fast if you have a lot of flow on a newer tractor.

4 inch will lift slower but more weight. Works with an older tractor with less pressure or needed for a heavier planter. Stronger cylinder of course for a heavy load as well.

Some old tractors barely get 1000 psi and less when wore out, new ones can be 2500 psi or more. The ram diameter likely isnt terribly important unless you are on the low end of hyd pressure.

3 inch was quite common unless the tractor had a low pressure hydraulic system. Most were 6 row and over 1000 lbs of dry fertilizer. Some smaller diameter cylinders had small stems and were prone to bending or breaking in such applications.

I do not have any fertilizer or insecticide boxes on mine. It is a very plain planter. No coulter disks, covering disks or anything. So I would think a 3 inch would be more than adequate.

Paul pretty much has it for you. Low pressure will need a bigger cylinder bore and a newer higher pressure system can use a smaller bore diameter the stroke is probably a standard 8 inch .

Whatever diameter you choose, make sure the cylinder is an "ASAE" type. This means the rod is 2" longer than a standard cylinder, usually threaded. I believe these are 20-1/4" closed length pin-to-pin, where a standard cylinder is 18-1/4"

If you use a standard cylinder the planter won't lift up all the way.
