Tearing down my 1939 9N steering this past weekend I made a cool discovery. There is a small cone that fits on the main steering shaft that runs from the steering wheel to the sector gears, and two small band of roller bearings rides inside this - upper and lower. In getting my parts list together on things I needed to buy, I discovered this very small cone part runs more than $16! Figuring I would grab a part number off it and try to find it at a bearing house for less, I was happy to make out a "Timken" on the top. After buffing the old dried up grease and corrosion so I could read the faint numbers, I discovered a part number of 9-N-3573 and then a Ford in script!
Alright, I know this is kinda lame, but to me it is cool that I found a Timkin AND a Ford stamp on the same cone, and a Ford part number instead of the standard Timkin one. The bottom cone for the bottom bearing must have been replaced at some point as it just said "Timkin 4-CB". It is small stuff like this that continues to keep me interested in this hobby.
