Another electrical issue

Hi, all. Seems as though there are a lot of electrical issues going around, so I"ll add to the list. I was having starting problems, so I started going through the recommended list (spark, fuel, etc.). I ran the battery down, so I jumped it from the family Blazer. (1950 8N, 12V conversion, front mount distributor). The starter ran on after I released the starter switch, so I turned off the ignition switch and the starter stopped. Now, I don"t get voltage to the starter side of the selonoid. The starter selonoid, starter switch, and ignition switch all test good. I get battery voltage to the top of the (square) coil. When I hooked up the selenoid but not the starter, the selenoid clicked and supplied battery voltage to the starter side of the selenoid twice, but then quite. It is almost like turning on the key grounds out the system, but I can"t tell where. Any hints on where to look next?

Thanks
Art

ignition switch turning off killed starter? sounds like a key to start system.

serves you right.. :)

get a test lamp and ohm meter.. trace power and test switch contacts.

in low volt starts sometimes you get contact welding... due to high current. ( it's a watts thing :) )

perhaps junky auto key start switch failed? )

do testing.. this is an easy one... just a couple componets to look at...

That's what is driving me nuts -- I know it is not a keyed starter, because I've tried to start it with the key off before -- starter cranks fine. I've run the wires three times according to the schematic here (JMOR's, I think -- thanks!)and I can't figure out why the key makes a difference with the starter.

Ignition switch came from this site, and still tests good, as does the starter selenoid. Voltage at the top of the coil is good, and the ground at the starter (and hence the selenoid) is good. I'm at a loss to see what I'm missing.

Thanks again.

Would you believe it just happened to have the starter stop spinning at the same time since the 2 switches do independently of each other. You stand a good chance you either let the smoke out of the solenoid and maybe the starter also but you can test that by jumping the 2 big posts of the solenoid and see if the engine will spin over. As for what caused the starter to keep spinning the solenoid just got stuck and that happens from time to time

check to see if it is a later 4 post ford solenoid that is getting power fromthe key.. might have got it befor ethe key and some wire got swapped...
