Another Hardner Question

Hello All - I know this question has beat to death, but I need to just paint my hood on my working 8N. I don't have a forced air respirator and I plan to paint outside. What paint should I use and will it be ok if I do not use a hardner? I have been thinking about using either Tisco or NAPA paint. Thanks for your help!

I painted a tractor in 2009 with Dupont Nason which used an isocyanate hardener. I painted it outside with a regular respirator keeping my face upwind as much as possible and held my breath when I was down wind. I'm still coughing from it. The hardener places like tractor supply sells for alkyd enamels is mild enough to be safe to use with a conventional respirator. Otherwise I won't make that mistake again.

I am a SCUBA diver. I don' get to dive anymore, but still have an Evinrude Aquanaut compressor with a full face mask that I have used when painting. I painted a hood and fenders for my son one weekend in the school shop where I taught. Covered EVERYTHING with plastic to protect from over spray. Had all of the exhaust fans on to keep fumes of of the building. It worked great.

Another teacher I worked came by while the parts were drying. Then when he saw me on Monday he asked if he could use the set-up. I said sure and explained how important it was to USE THE MASK, even though it is not the most comfortable thing. A couple of weeks later, he painted his stuff on a weekend. He did not show up on Monday. The stuff was still all spread out in the shop. The mask and compressor was still in the exact sport where I left it for him. Had obviously not been used.

He missed the whole week and was never the same again. Always short of breath. He is LUCKY it did not kill him.

Like they used to say on that old TV Show, Rip Cord, "Don't Bet Your Life You can be Careless and GET AWAY WITH IT".
