Another starter question

I searched and really did not find what I was looking for, so here is my question. How far apart is too far apart the starter can slide apart before the brushes have to be put back onto the shaft? The reason that I ask is that when I picked up my starter from my work bench, the end slid off about a 1/2", I slid it back on and it slid back off again. I then put it into the bellhousing and everything bolted right up with no resistance. Did I accidentally screw something up or is it still okay? Thanks in advance.

T-bird.......you know I never measured it, but iff'n yer starter parts slid back together eazily, then the coil-spring pressed brushes didn't pop thru their brush holders and catch on the end of the armature bars.

You have just learned WHY we recommend putting NUTS (5/16-18) on the starter 8-in screws to keep the starter together while handling out of the tractor. .......Dell

I did not know about the nuts on the starters until after I had already put it back on the tractor. But the main thing is I just wanted to make sure that I did not hose myself by braking something in the starter, I am just about ready to start it and I don't need anything to hold me back due to a mistake.

I agree with Dell, if it slid back together easy, you are good to go. If the brush(s) came out it is basically impossible to slide the starter back together.
