Another stuck clutch?

Using my '50 front mount 12 v converted 8n to do some light bush hogging and after about 3 hours my clutch acts like it is stuck. Pedal pressure feels like usual, push pedal down and it grinds trying to engage pto, or transmission. I was able to idle it down and force it into 1st to load it on trailer. Can/will a clutch stick while in use?

"Can/will a clutch stick while in use?"

No, not in the usual sense of the term, anyway!

If free travel hasn't changed (which might indicate a linkage or TO bearing issue), it's very possible the lining is tearing off of the clutch disc.

A clutch pilot bearing going out will give those symptoms. It can cause enough drag to keep the input shaft on the transmission turning. Idling the engine will slow the turning of the input shaft enough to let you jam it in gear and then the clutch will let you stop. If the lining is tearing off is likely will jam and the clutch not function at all.

in addition to the other posts,
check your linkage carefully down at the trans while pushing the pedal down with your hand.
look for cracks/splits/broken which open slightly when you push down.

make sure your weep hole in the bellhousing drain is open too. if not and oil builds up you can get a sticky oily swelled up clutch that is slow to disengage and grabby.

I've had close to what you describe, but on my truck. The newer aftermarket clutch lost a spring from the center hub and it wedged between the clutch and the pressure plate. It would not shift with the engine running unless I pulled hard on the shifter. I'd try the other procedures posted here before I split the tractor. Needless to say I don't use aftermarket clutches unless it is a LUK clutch.

If a film of oil gets on the clutch disc etc it can cause a temporary sticking of the clutch. @ When the clutch pedal is depressed the tractor will continue on for a few feet or even more before the sticking clutch will release.
Really get your attention if headed for a ditch or building etc. It happens.
