Anti-Freeze

What if anti-freeze in an old tractor tests to be good to 10 below but we get a 23 below night? Will it freeze and expand & bust or does it gel & forgive?

It probably won't hurt it any. If it jells up (not likely) then when you start it up it might blow some of the antifreeze out the overflow because it can't circulate.

A frozen antifreeze/water mix good for -10 won't freeze at -23 . It will turn to slush . BTDT . Shouldn't hurt anything . Ya might want to loosen the cap though unless it holds good pressure . The pressure will help lower the freeze point to .

Most likally won't hurt anything but why take the risk? Add more antifreeze to bring the protection to -30 and don't worry.

I would use a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. One gallon of antifreeze will make 2 gallons of mix. Then you're well protected. Hal

Hi

Just be sure you get a gallon of anti-freeze that is pure anti-freeze, not that pre mix stuff that is half water already mixed. That could be a messy.

Careful mixing them if you do. I forget the two different types available, and someone here can readily name them, but they set right next to each other on the shelf and do NOT mix. Typically I think green versus pink, but seems to me that Zerox had blue that was the same as green. Bottom line, two different types available, don't mix them or bigger problems.

Zerox makes copiers, Zerex makes antifreeze. Any antifreeze will mix. The problem never has been in the mixing of different brands or types, its the use of the antifreeze thats the problem. In fact, many antifreezes are the excat same thing, just a different color, so color doesnt matter at all. Its the chemical makeup of the antifreeze that matters.Ex: John Deeres coolant is made by Zerex, its green, the same thing Ford uses in cars, but gold, Chryslers version is, if I remeber right, orange. Now, the Dexcool is something completely different. I wouldnt use it in my worse enemys cars/truck/tractor.The chemical makeup of it is corrosive, and while it will mix fine with plain jane antifreeze, its not recommended, mainly because the chemical that makes it corrosive, becomes more corrosive, but even thats "over time".Some antifreezes have a more robust "package" in the bottle. These are mainly heavy duty antifreezes, mainly for deisel engines and heavy duty gas engines. Most, if not all of these can be mixed, but if they are mixed with like, plain green antifreeze, then the "package" has been comprimised and it becomes less of heavy duty type antifreeze.

The answer to your question as many have stated is no, nothing will get broken. For a vehicle or tractor parked for the winter, a -10F reading is good for any temp you're ever going to see in any agric. part of North America. Now if you are going to USE it that's a horse of a different color. BTW straight antifreeze won't circulate properly either at cold temp.
