Antique Irrigation V-Ditcher

Hi everyone, my father-in-law passed away last year, and we inherited his implements, one of which is this v-ditcher. You can tell it's been field fixed quite a few times, to the point where it was no longer doing its job properly, so my wife asked me to rebuild it.

I have no idea who made it, although there are very faint letters that are somewhat visible on the left vertical arm....I can sort of make out the last few letters, although I won't say what I think it says, because I wouldn't want to influence anyone's ideas, and "Model 162-F" stenciled in yellow on the inside of the right wing. At the back of that same wing are the remnants of what looks like maybe a decal, but it's of no help. I found paint flakes that are original, it was painted red.

Four years ago I replaced what I call the 1-1/2" round crossbar, which has the ears for the lift pins. My wife then proceeded to hit a tree root with it and went full send, at which point that crossbar left the chat. Then our neighbor added some arms and a bunch of booger welds, so I decided to take everything apart, down to what I'm pretty sure are the original parts, and redo it properly. I'm going to use 2" x 2" x 1/4" square tubing, instead of round stock, for the crossbar. I haven't decided whether to use only one ear per side and use hitch pins or two ears per side and just slip the tractor lift bars in between. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I bought new 1/2"-13 #3 plow bolts and square nuts for the blades, as well as two new hinges to weld onto the wings and new 1/2" x 3-1/4" shoulder bolts and nylock nuts to attach the wings to the main body. The adjustable two-piece horizontal bar that connects the two wings was bent and non-functional, so I put the parts in my 20-ton press and straightened them out, and the bar moves smoothly now. One of the original long arms that attaches at the rear of the wings is also bent, so I'll put that in the press too.

The wings are 54" long and 12" high, including the attached blades.

Here are the pics of it. If anyone knows who made this thing, I'd love to know, I really like the design of it.

That is pretty neat.

Wouldn’t ever see such a thing in my neighborhood, soil type, rocks, and too wet heavy ground it just wouldn’t accomplish anything. We need drainage, not added water 90% of the time.

Looks like you did a nice job on it.

Thanks, Paul. I had fixed it once before, about four or five years ago, having to replace the crossbar for the lower lift arms. It was originally built with 1-1/2" round bar, but it broke again, when my wife hit a tree root and went full send. I replaced it with 1/4" thick 2"x2" square tubing this time, and it's going nowhere ever again. This v-ditcher should outlast me.
