Any tips on cleaning this thing up....

I got it apart. Should I power wash the thing? I tried a wire wheel on some of the rust with very good results.

I first need to clean the grease and oil off. Any tricks you would like to share.

Thanks in advance.

might try a petro chemical like foamy engine brite, then a power wash.. then something like purple power and another wash.. stay off the distrib and genny and gasket seams, starter too.

Thanks,

That's what I was kinda thinking. I have a few more parts to remove and then start to clean it up.

It starting to become like remodeling a house. Every time I put something new on, I start to wonder if I should replace what is next to it.

It may cost me more than expected but I think I will have something very useful when done.

Thanks again,

If you can beg, borrow, steal, or even rent a hot water pressure washer or steam cleaner you will be amazed at the results.

I cut a hole for my head and arms in a 55 gal. trash bag,,, slip it on,,,put on a pair of rubber boots,,, check my water supply and the fuel in the pressure washer and go at it,,, hot water would be nice,,, a bud of mine does the final with diluted muriatic acid,,, have not tried it but makes $cents....

Have fun

WARNING  all I know I read on the Internet,,, do it enuff and you can become a guru also,,, not responsible for damages,,, I read it and just pass it along,,, proceed with caution

I'll second what Soundguy suggested. I just cleaned my 8N prior to a brake job. I went to Wally World and bought their store brand engine cleaner. Let my tractor sit in the sun a bit to warm it up. Spayed the engine cleaner, let it sit about 20 minutes and then hosed off. Repeat as needed. Let dry in the sun.

Worked great - took off 90% of the crap. Hugh time saver. The Wally World cleaner was was about $2.25 a can. I used 3 cans for the rear end of the tractor.

As said by Soundguy stay off the distributor, carb, oil fill, both dip sticks, and the big spring on the 3 pt. with both the cleaner and water

That purple power works better than anything i have ever tried. I put it in a spray bottle full strength and let it soak. I have hauld them to the car wash but they don't like that if they catch you.

yep.. when i buy an oldie needing work, i usually figure 2x the selling price to get her to a finished condition with all defects fixed, cleaned and painted...
