AR starter removal?

My '49 AR starter keeps kicking out of drive. It will start, but definitely needs some work done to it. This is the top mounted starter, bolted into the crankcase cover. No problems getting it loose, but there isn't any room to pull the starter back through the cast bracket mounting hole. Can't pull it back quite far enough before the starter hits more of that transmission cover and I haven't been able to twist it enough to clear. What's the trick to removing this starter?? Thanks. I was thinking the rear of the starter needs to start coming up as soon as you begin to remove it from the bracket . But it’s been a long time since I’ve fooled with one!!

I did mine twice last fall and the best I can tell you is lift and twist and it will come out. Ron MN

I had to take the grease zerk off the steering sector and disconnect the oil pressure gage line. Then I could pull it back far enough that it came out. Actually, there wasn't anything wrong with the starter. When I was disconnecting the cables/wires/mounting bolts I found that everything was just snugged up good. Nothing really tightened down like it should be. I wondered at the time if I might have a ground problem but as long as I had everything loose I was going to go ahead and get it checked out. The shop didn't find anything wrong with a quick check and mentioned the ground. Put it back on, tightened everything up like it's supposed to be and it's working fine.

Bought this a few weeks ago and it was somewhat mechanically worked on a while ago. After finding everything that wasn't tight on the starter, I've started to go through all the bolts/nuts. I've been able tighten everything I can get at anywhere from an 1/8 of a turn to I full revolution! No wonder I've got leaks everywhere!!
