Asphalt millings

They will hold up well. The difficult part is getting them spread. They do not spread like crusher run, they tend to stick together.
 
Buddy in CT used them for his drive. The plus is they knit well and any low or sunken spots can simply be filled and leveled. The minus is that they track everywhere into the house when its hot. Bottom line is I would do it if I had a source.
 
They work very well. Best to get them right from the milling machine while their still hot.
Its best to get some where their only milling a thin layer, no chunks like in a complete removal. Just have the equipment there to lay it out upon arrival.
 
We have used them for years, they lay down and stay. Ever time I catch a project close buy I try to get all I can. Like one poster say there can be differences some ground finer that other but overall good material.
 
Works great. If you can have a compactor/roller on hand to go over it when its spread. It works up like black top.

I may not have said this...
You can spray a light mist of diesel on it when it is hot in the summer to melt the tar and get much better results. Especially if you go over it with a roller.
 
For the most part, millings work well. I've probably put down over 750 yards of it over the last ten years. You want to look for a source job with more-recent paving which means the millings will be finer and will have more oil content. Very old road millings will be clumpy and almost impossible to grade out and flatten out. There are suppliers around here who will double-mill the material in order to make it finer and easier to grade. Another plus is if you have a vibratory roller and you do the job in warm weather. If done well you can practically create a paved road.
 
I have a 300 foot driveway and dress it with millings. I also work heavy high way construction as a heavy equipment operator and actually sometimes run one of our mills. There is no such thing as hot millings our of a normal milking machine. Its done cold and I adjust the water to keep the dust down. There are a bunch of things that effect the size of the millings. First is what the asphalt is like . If its in rough shape your going to get bigger pieces. Second is the speed Im milling at. The faster the bigger the pieces. Then there is depth. Shallow depth generally makes for larger pieces. One of the last things is the amount of teeth on the drum. More teeth equals finer millings and cut. It also means having to go slower. Getting nice fine millings out of my mill is next to impossible. We run as fast as the conditions will let us. I know I really didnt answer your question, but many have no clue how they come about. We have 2 mills. Cat 200ms I believe. Just sharing. And yes millings will work on your driveway when they get packed in.
 
It's next to impossible to get millings here. When I asked last summer when they did the highway by my house about getting a load, I was tnld they can use up to a certain percent of the millings blended with new asphalt?

Over 50 years ago it was a common practice to hide toxic cancer causing chemicals in used oils that was spread on gravel roads.

A dairy in a town east of Terre Haute got dirt from county that was making the road wider.

Dairy lost all the cows. Couldn't prove where the toxic chemicals came from. I think it was PCB's

Not saying that toxic chemicals are hidden in oils used in asphalt today, but what about 50 or 60 years ago??
Makes me a little concerned.

A ready mix concrete plant in Terre Haute crushes concrete and sells it for half the price of white rock.

A concrete block plant in TH is crushing up it rejects and using it to fill in an old clay pit to expand the block plant's property.

Crushed concrete is used to make road beds in my hood.

I've never used Asphalt millings. Don't Know where to buy it. Around TH, asphalt millings are recycled to make roads.

Just using used motor oil for dirt road dust control is usually not toxic.
But some applicators were being paid by chemicals to properly haul away waste chemicals.
Then using it with some motor oil on the roads and being paid by the roads department to control dust.

Dioxin and PCB's were put down among others.

Mine that I worked at used a lot of peanut or corn oil to control dust on haul roads.

Back in mid 80's EPA came to do inspection on our crop dusting operation to check for chemical spills. They said they found DDT. Only problem we had never used DDT and property had never had never had any chemical operations on it. For several years they checked all over area to try to prove we used DDT. After a few years just never heard from EPA again.
