I got a 55 gal drum of red oil at an
auction I assume is atf. If it is atf
would it be ok to use for hyd oil/trans
hydraulic in tractors since hyd oil is so
expensive or could it damage seals? It
seems like a medium to heavy grade.

Seals would be the least of the problems if you put it in a power train that has wet clutches and or brakes. I wouldn't use it.

if there is a place near by your location, you can get it analyzed to find out what it is, instead of guessing, then use as you see fit

I wouldn't. Will that savings outweigh repair costs? That's a question you have to answer for yourself. Might be fine, but might turn out to be the most expensive cheap oil you ever used.

As Jim.ME and Rust red posted, all that matters is does the tractor have wet brakes or clutches. No mystery to it. If no, you can't hurt it. No need for expensive additives for something that your tractor doesn't have, LOL.

Red doesn't necessarily mean ATF. I used to get red gear oil that was used in ski area chairlift gear boxes. Much thicker than ATF of course.

If it is in the original drum, there is often an indication on the drum. If it is not in the original container and is unlabeled, I would use it for chain saw bar oil. It could be used hydraulic oil someone has drained out of who knows what. When I was dragracing, I would end up with a fair amount of used ATF which I stored in a five-gallon container. After it set around for a while and the contaminates settled to the bottom it looked pretty good from the top.

Could be atf. Could be iso 32 a lot of companies make that red which is 10w hydraulic which is not good as a mto or multi purpose tractor oil. If you ever look at hygard or permatran or pick your flavor of mto its pretty thin your description leads me to believe thicker but who knows. You can dye any oil red. The short answer is you dont really know if the only thing that might not cause a 911 for you is using it to start a fire.
