a while back someone posted about test done on penetrating oils and how a mix of ATF and Acetone was the best. Also recall seeing posts on using ATF to free siezed engines by filling frozen cylinder and letting sit until all ATF had drained thru. I posed this info to a mechanic friend of mine and he said yeah he has done those tricks many times. He even says if you have a valve or lifter that is sticking buy some cheap oil and filter, do an oil change but sub a quart of ATF for last quart of oil. Run engine for about 500 miles then do an oil change again. He says oil consistency will be sludgy from the ATF cleaning the engine, as if you ran your car for 10,000 miles before an oil change. Note: he does this is on automobiles, and I didn"t think to ask if it can be done on a tractor.So my question is... Can this be done on my 9N without harming anything and if so ho many hours run time should I do it for?
Thanks, Dave (OH) {"40 9N35753 12v front dizzy}

many of us dump some atf in the engine oil a few hours prior to a change, then run her good then change. more of an art than a science. add atf, run till well warmed and cirulated.. then change..

It is common for me to tell people to use ATF. #1 to free up locked up engines. #2 to free up sticking valves #3 to clean up and engine. I use it in the gas the oil and in the cylinders. Been using it for well over a decade and the archives if you check my posts will say it over and over again. Shoot some people think I own stock in the ATF supply some how

Would this work for an old (30-40 year) B&S engine that runs but has been poorly taken care of? (Practically no oil changes)

@ soundguy & old: Thanks for the confirmation. This site is great - no matter the question, simple or complex, you guys are always willing to answer.
Thanks again. Dave (OH) {"40 9N35753}

This is a quote from "Farm Show" magazine

" Best Penetrating Oil Is The Cheapest

Machinist's Workshop magazinerecebtly tested penetrating oils for breah-out torque on rusted nuts. They "scientificalyrusted" a bunch of nuts,treated them with various penetrants, and then measured the torque it took to remove them. Here are the results.
Nothing = 516 pounds ,, WD-40 = 238 pounds ,, PB Blaster = 214 pounds ,, Likuid Wrench = 127 pounds ,, Kano Kroil = 106 pounds ,, ATF - Acetone Mix = 53 pounds.

The Atf-Acetone Mix was a 50-50 mix."

I shortened this some but the info is as printed. joe

I would not work the engine real hard (like plowing) with the ATF in there, but half-throttle lawn mowing would be fine.

'Twas me that posted the link... I was just passing on what I considered interesting info.... nothing new or unheard of.

Myself, I'd be a bit cautious running it, and, as mentioned already, pay close attention and not work it hard. It mostly depends how much junk might get broken loose and what is to become of it...
