Auger on a John Deere M?

Has anyone converted to the 3 point system and run an auger for post holes? I would like to try this with my M but I have 2 concerns;
Will it lift high enough?

Is there enough power to actually dig holes with it?

Kind of an aside: I have a couple of A/C roto-balers. I actually got one to "Bale". I got it to bale. Now I have to get it to tie/wrap.
Anyway, the neighbor had a couple windrows of straw, so I asked him if I could try the roto-baler on them. He said go ahead.
Anyway, I pulled it with my Deere M. It didn't like it real well, but it did make a few bales.

I have known 2 people that used an auger on an M.
Worked fine they said.

Normally it should be referred as a post hole digger or abbreviated as phd.
Auger generally refers to a grain auger for putting grain into a bin or similarly.

My 420S is two generations newer than your M.

My 420, and your M might be able to turn the PHD into the ground.
But my 420 nor your M will be able to reverse gear the pto in order to get it out from around a rock or tree root, etc.
If needed.
Then we have to dig it out or turn it out with a BFW (Big Wrench).

Yes it will you are better off running it at an idle and letting it kill it than going full bore this honestly is probably about perfect tractor for the task you are less likely to break something since it doesn’t have much power or get yourself hurt. I’ve never had a tractor that could reverse the pto out like a skidloader mounted one. Is a 420 with that reverser able to do it?

So in the winter should I say “Ice hole digger” ?

I have run a post hole auger on a 1025r, which is rated at roughly the same PTO hp as the M. I did need to take it slow, and if the ground was really hard it was slow and rough going, but it got it done...so as far as PTO hp goes, I think you have enough.

But having run the auger on other tractors, and knowing how my M and MT lift, I suspect it won't lift high enough. I don't know that for certain, though. Just a suspicion.

As always i can't say enough about a PHD mounted to a skid steer. Rent, beg, borrow or steal a PHD on a skid steer because it is far superior to any 3 pt PHD.

Does anyone have experience running a belt driven post hole digger? My M has the belt pulley and I might be able to get one from an M-H Pony.
