Axle bearing torque 4230

Finally got around to changing the axle seals on my 4230. Thought just a seal had gone out, but the outer bearing was no good on one side. I decided to replace all the parts on both sides while I had it apart. New bearings, races, spacers, shims, seals and cups. The book says to torque the axle to 145ft pounds. I am assuming that is okay with all new parts? I know putting it back together with old bearings that number would be different. Just want to double check before I put it back together. All in all not a bad job really, went pretty fast.

you need to lead ball it to determine how many shims it takes first.

Book says one thrust washer, I bought one new.. Was only one w/ the old assembly.. Does not talk about shimming it any differently, only setting the torque different if you are reusing the old bearings. I just wanted to confirm if the book as correct on that torque spec. Thanks for the help!

There is a new procedure. with the axel assy standing on end use a 1/4 lead ball under the flat washer. tighten the bolt to 145 lb. Then remove the lead ball and using a micrometer, measure the mashed ball. Use that number to determine how many shimes (from DEERE )to use UNDER THE FLAT WASHER then torque axel. I believe there is a new torque speck as well. While you are there I would check the differential bearings as well. Support the diff while removing the quill. The left bearing would be most likely but check both. Jap bearings dont last in there.

Yes Don I was getting ready to explain the new torque procedure, but got busy. I cut a 50 caliber muzzle load in half (using what I have handy) place them on the axle with some sticky grease ( I have some here that will follow you all over the farm) tighten the planetary down tight, then remove it and mic the lead, I then subtract .005 to give it a bit of pre-load, and add that amount of shims, then tighten it back down. I see where he changed the spacer on the outer end, that is where the axle bearing loose their tension..
