my 1952 8n has a sqeak coming from the right rear axle. is it time to replace the bearings? the big nut on the axle is welded on and a space is widening between the big nut and the hub. whats it going to take to fix it?...new axle?bearing? seals?

thanks cjm

Yes to all three. Luckily - it is a fairly straight forward job and can easily be done by first timers. Don't forget the hubs, shims, and bearing races (cups) as well.

Good luck,
Dan

As Dan points out.. It's likely your hub no longer fits the axle tight.. and long ago someone welde dthe nut on.. the axle is harder than the hub.. and you are probably hearing the hub slowly self destruct.. New parts as Dan mentions will fix you up.

The squeak you hear, plus the fact that the nut is welded on, is probably the hub scraping against the brake spring. Be prepared to replace at least the hub & probably the axle & perhaps the bearing retainer as well. In my recent case, the dust shield as well! My biggest learning experience was that I should have waited until I had it completely pulled down before I started ordering parts! While you are in there, you might as well do the brakes as well. John Smith & Don at nnalert's had all of the parts plus great assistance. And, folks on this board helped out as well. The pic above is what a bad hub & axle look like. See how far the axle extends past the hub?
